Area donors, businesses help provide school supplies for those in need
Twin Lakes Food Bank will host its annual back-to-school event at Mt. Olive Church to provide backpacks, school supplies, and family fun for Folsom’s under-resourced students.
“It’s truly one of our team’s favorite days of the year. An afternoon dedicated to supporting the children of the families we serve at the food bank. The collaboration of our community coming together to assist these children is a beautiful thing to witness,” said Lindsay Olson, Guest Engagement Coordinator for Twin Lakes Food Bank. “And of course the excitement on their faces when they get to pick out a brand new backpack is the icing on the cake!”
The Back-to-School Extravaganza empowers local students by providing back-to-school essentials and memorable experiences that include: backpacks, grade-appropriate school supplies, Target gift cards, hygiene kits, haircuts, ice cream, and community resources.
Community partners such as local churches, Lucky’s Barbershop, Folsom Fire, Folsom Police Department, Folsom’s Hope, Micron, Chick-fil-A, and more help provide experiences that make this day extra special.
Their dedication touches the lives of students across Folsom as children meet their heroes and enjoy a one-of-a kind afternoon full of fun! Last year, one elementary student’s highlight of the event was receiving his first ever haircut. Barbers and volunteers witnessed his overwhelming excitement when he sat in a professional barber chair and received a handsome haircut he was proud of!
“We do a lot of giving back to the Community,” said Greg Miller of Lucky’s Barbershop. “But this is the best and most rewarding event of all.” This year, 365 under-resourced students have pre-registered to attend the event.
“After a call for donors to sponsor students for $25 each, the community responded immediately, sponsoring every child in less than a week,” Lisa Tuter, Executive Director of the Twin Lakes Food Bank told Folsom Times. “This is yet another example of the extraordinary support from our community.”
From 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., registered students can pick up backpacks and school supplies. Families can then visit with community partners, and students will enjoy chicken sandwiches, ice cream, and entertainment.
“The Back-to-School Extravaganza highlights Folsom’ s compassion and the Twin Lakes Food Bank’s mission of mobilizing the community to provide food and support to families,” the food bank added.
