Month long effort sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation
Sacramento County’s Bradshaw Animal Shelter is participating in Empty the Shelters this July 8 – 31. The nationwide adoption event is sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation and helps homeless pets find families by making adoption affordable for prospective pet owners.
During the event, there will be no adoption fees for dogs and cats. To adopt a shelter pet or two, visit the Bradshaw Animal Shelter at 3839 Bradshaw Rd, Sacramento, CA 95827. The shelter is open Tuesday – Sunday noon to 5 p.m. and Wednesday noon to 6 p.m. All available pets can be viewed at the Animal Care Services website.
Adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, current vaccines, a lifetime microchip registration and one-year licensing (for county residents).
Animals of all ages and breeds come to the shelter because owners do not have time or funds, or because they were lost and turned in, or picked up as strays and never claimed
The Sacramento County Animal Shelter advises potential adopters to carefully consider several key items before adopting:
How much time do you have to spend with a pet daily?
Do you have the patience to lovingly train, housetrain, feed, and walk a pet?
Have you considered the cost of food, shots, veterinarian visits, licensing, and more? Additional information about owning a pet.
Are you at least 18 years of age? If you are renting, do you live where pets are accepted?

Dog or Cat?
Sincedogs are pack animals, they desire to be with humans or other dogs vs. isolated in a backyard. When left alone, they may develop anxiety or become bored and bark, chew and dig to relieve these feelings.
Cats also do better inside. Outdoor cats are subject to death or injury by cars or other animals; the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is only two years vs. the average of 15 years for indoor cats.
Young Vs. Adult Animal
Kittens and puppies are adorable but are not the best match for every household. Their sharp claws and teeth can destroy property and they require a lot of time to train and socialize. They may not adapt well if you already have pets.
Renters and Homeowners
Some landlords do not allow pets, so we ask you to provide written proof that pets are allowed where you live. Also, before adopting, consider how many times you might move during the average 12-year lifespan of a dog. Some homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover certain breeds of dogs. Check before you adopt.
